Con – Artist Turned Fine Artist: Anna Delvey’s Paintings Feature In Group Exhibition

MILAN, Italy – It appears that fraudster, ‘business woman’ and faux socialite, Anna Delvey, has now shape shifted into a visual artist, from behind the bars of her U.S. detention centre. Delvey, who is also known as Anna Sorokin, is showcasing her latest paintings in a group exhibition at a gallery in Lower Manhattan. The Russian – born criminal, whose scams of high society were exposed in a New York magazine articles and then turned into the hit Netflix drama Inviting Anna, is now attempting to climb the ranks of New York’s art market.

According to the Times, ‘everyone at the exhibition agrees she has a promising career ahead. The only thing holding her back is that she is once more in jail in upstate New York and facing deportation’. ‘It’s really exciting’, she told the paper. ‘The is a lot of crime in the art world. People are very non – judgmental’.

The display, which goes by the title ‘Free Anna Delvey’, will feature the prisoner’s pieces alongside other artworks by 33 artists, who claim to have been ‘inspired’ by Delvey’s story. Five of Delvey’s pencil and acrylic drawings, which she made in prison, have been reproduced on large – print watercolour paper by Alfred Martinez, the show’s co – curator.

Julia Morrison, the show’s other co – curator, told the New York Times that she initially discovered Delvey’s drawings whilst browsing on Instagram. She stated, ‘No one is just a hero’,, alluding to Delvey’s multifaceted persona. The exhibition is apparently an attempt to tell ‘her side of the story’, as Martinez told Forbes.

Delvey’s sketches are being sold for $10,000 each, and according to Martinez, 25 per cent of the show’s proceeds will go towards the fake heiress’s legal defence, who is currently fighting against Delvey’s approaching deportation from America.
