Think Monique Lhuillier and two fabulous categories instantly come to mind. First are the brides with their frothy gowns. Second are the many celebrities who have walked red carpets in various beaded and flounced dresses from Lhuillier. Both are celebrated in a monograph entitled Monique Lhuillier dedicated to the tulle and lace draped world of the fashion designer.
Paris/France – The book begins with Lhuillier’s story: from her childhood in the island of Cebu in the Philippines, the influence of her glamorous mother on her own style, her move to California to study fashion, to her wedding to Tom Bugbee. The search for her own wedding gown would become the impetus for what would become a successful bridal business and subsequently a ready – to – wear collection.
‘Twenty – five years later, we are a global lifestyle brand producing dozens of collections per year…We’ve introduced fragrance, fine jewelry, home, lingerie and accessories collections. Most rewardingly, we are parents to our two children, Jack and Sophie, who are along with us for the journey’, writes Lhuillier in the book.
The actress Reese Witherspoon, a Monique Lhuillier bride, penned the foreword to the book. ‘She understands why women want to wear something that makes them beautiful and how her creations will become a part of the fabric of their lives. Monique is woven into so many of my memories, and I’m proud to call such a gifted, hilarious, and brilliant woman my friend’.
Monique Lhuillier the book begins with a section on the core of the designer’s business – brides. And page upon page are wedding gowns fashion out of tulle, chiffon, feathers, beadwork and embroidery. Ruffles, flounces, trains and bustles.
The parade of bridal dresses is followed by highlights from her ready – to – wear collection with backstage photographs from fashion shows and editorial image with stunning locations. Daytime dresses, cocktail frocks and gala gowns are worn by models as they traipsed through the Andre Le Notre – designed gardens of Chateau de Villette, look out on the balconies of villa in Lake Como, and lounged in the more is more home of Tony Duquette. The images invite the viewer to create narrative dor the model wearing these fanciful confections. Who is she? Where is she going? What’s her story?
The book then moves on to all the boldfaced names who have worn Monique Lhuillier to important events and on the red carpet. Among them former First Lady Michelle Obama, Gwyneth Palthrow, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
Monique Lhuillier finishes her book with photographs of her life in the studio, at work and at home, all the while dressed impeccably of course.
